My love for theatre started in high school, where I was a member of the drama club. Here are a few recent plays and musicals I've seen that I appreciated. Many more to come!
This is my absolute favorite of any I have seen. I saw this on a whim in Denver and would gladly pay to see it again. I enjoyed the strong woodwind presence in the orchestra. The humor in this had me cracking up all the way through.
I thought this one was just okay - maybe expectations were set too high. The humor mostly landed but I thought A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder was much funnier.
This was the most technically impressive musical I have seen by far. The use of the triple-revolve stage and the descending "elevator" to the underworld provides an extra layer of depth to the retelling of the Orpheus myth. The voice of the Orpheus was, as you would expect on Broadway in New York City, absolutely incredible.
Produced by the IU Jacobs School of Music. The Opera School at IU is a priviledge to see. This was the first professional musical I have seen and I couldn't believe what I had been missing! The sound of the chorus was particularily great for this one, as was the songwriting - on par for Stephen Sondheim."
A Bel Canto tragedy performed at the Magyar Állami Operaház. The staging emphasizes the historical conflict between Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I, set within one of the most acoustically and architecturally impressive opera houses in Europe. It was in Italian, though, which made it hard to follow given the length of around two and a half hours.
Produced at Minnesota State University. I definitely plan to see this on Broadway if I ever get the chance. The dance scenes in particular seem to be pretty good for a student production. I really enjoyed the spectacle of the few major pieces, with line dancing, lights, curtains, and all setting the stage before it gives way to darker themes later in the performance.
The first musical that told the story in the modern style with the story woven throughout the music. I enjoyed the "dream ballet" scene for its alternative storytelling (ballet with no lyrics).
